Single Sign-On (SSO) and Federated Identity refers to the ability to consolidate the identities of users outside of the application, provide authentication services for the application, and pass this information to the application.  SSO (either Web or Enterprise) can provide this service within a corporation for internal users, business partners, and/or customers.  Federated Identities expand the domain beyond the single enterprise to allow a grouping of businesses to leverage authentication events that have occurred in a trusted foreign environment for access to business systems.
